Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a very easy to learn, natural and enjoyable mental technique of deep relaxation and rest practised for 15-20 minutes in the morning and evening.
It gives deep rest to the mind and body, releases mental and physical stress, and allows you to use more of your potential. It dissolves stress and fatigue, promoting inner happiness, better health, and increased creativity and intelligence, allowing the enjoyment of dynamic activity during the day and refreshing sleep at night. TM is the most popular and effective technique of meditation or relaxation available. It is increasingly recommended by doctors and health professionals. It simply utilises the natural tendency of the mind to settle down and experience the least excited state of consciousness, giving deep relaxation and rest. During TM the slow alpha frequency power in the frontal cortex increases indicating a state of restful alertness. However, TM is not bio-feedback or alpha-wave control. Firstly, TM is completely effortless, with changes in the body and mind occurring spontaneously. Secondly,TM produces more than one specific change, such as more alpha waves. The deep rest and alertness is an integrated physiological response including a whole pattern of brainwave activity. As measured on the electroencephalograph (EEG) machine, TM produces brainwave coherence in all frequencies, indicating the brain is working in a more orderly and co-ordinated way. The findings indicate that TM, on average, can reduce the biological age of a person by 5 to 12 years, as well as significantly reducing the incidence of illness and risk of heart disease. Studies also show that TM is found to result in warmer interpersonal relationships, less anxiety, increased self-esteem and self-confidence, increased problem-solving ability and greater creativity. TM comes from from the ancient Vedic tradition - a universal system of knowledge preserved for many generations by a long line of teachers. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the latest in this tradition is now regarded as one of the world's foremost teacher in the field of consciousness. Many academic institutions have recognised the importance of his contribution to the development of human potential. At present TM is growing at a rate faster than at any other time in its history. There is a great upsurge in interest, particularly among doctors who recognise it as a simple and effective antidote to stress. Scientific research on TM has been conducted at 215 independent universities and research institutes. TM is taught in schools, in prisons, to the military and police forces in many countries around the world. It doesn't even matter whether you believe in TM or not. TM is natural, like gravity. If you don't believe in gravity, and you drop a tennis ball, the ball still falls. In the same way, TM is automatic. It does not require any belief. It works for everyone. The technique allows the activity of the mind to settle down in a natural way until it is left quiet, but still wide awake. It's so simple. Q. Is the investment worth it? |
