What TM Is

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a very easy to learn, natural and enjoyable mental technique of deep relaxation and rest practised for 15-20 minutes in the morning and evening.

It gives deep rest to the mind and body, releases mental and physical stress, and allows you to use more of your potential. It dissolves stress and fatigue, promoting inner happiness, better health, and increased creativity and intelligence, allowing the enjoyment of dynamic activity during the day and refreshing sleep at night.

TM is the most popular and effective technique of meditation or relaxation available. It is increasingly recommended by doctors and health professionals. It simply utilises the natural tendency of the mind to settle down and experience the least excited state of consciousness, giving deep relaxation and rest.

Research shows that, in fact, practising TM is a bit like taking a 'mental bath'. It allows all the stresses of the day to be released in a natural way, allowing the mind to function more efficiently.

During TM the slow alpha frequency power in the frontal cortex increases indicating a state of restful alertness.

However, TM is not bio-feedback or alpha-wave control. Firstly, TM is completely effortless, with changes in the body and mind occurring spontaneously. Secondly,TM produces more than one specific change, such as more alpha waves. The deep rest and alertness is an integrated physiological response including a whole pattern of brainwave activity. As measured on the electroencephalograph (EEG) machine, TM produces brainwave coherence in all frequencies, indicating the brain is working in a more orderly and co-ordinated way.
